Coaching and Mentoring Tip Sheet

Language and thinking form a critical and complex interrelation.

Fuzzy language can often be indicative of fuzzy thinking.

Prompting clarity of thought and language can help to disentangle, analyse, interpret, organise and frame a person’s perceptions, understandings, aspirations and goals.

Here are a couple of tips to assist in creating clarity:

  • Objectively, constructively and respectfully challenge perceptions and test their validity
  • Establish a clear focus for goal development that provides the greatest return on investment
  • Paraphrase, organise and/or summarise what has been discussed to refine intent and test understanding.

Without clarity, there is a risk of disorientation and confusion.

With clarity, a way forward can be identified for a person to achieve their goal.
